Fourteen Fallacious Arguments

Fourteen Fallacious Arguments

Fourteen fallacious arguments on why UFOs (as intelligently controlled extra-terrestrial vehicles) do not (or cannot) exist.

(And why there is no cover up)

Here we go:

(1) UFO’s do not exist because: the U.S. government is so inept, and so broad, that they are incapable of keeping such important secrets.

FALSE (and partially true): Have you ever seen a picture of the dead Osama Bin Laden? No you haven’t. You may have seen a hoaxed picture of his dead body on the internet, but it wasn’t him. Pictures were taken at his sea burial, however President Obama said that releasing the pictures could incite retribution from terrorist factions. Media clamored for the government to release the photos. Obama said “no.” Our media (with their extremely short attention spans) forgot about it. Now it is three years later, and everyone has forgotten (except for me and probably a few other people). So yes, our government can keep secrets when they want to.

Plus, the government does not need to keep many secrets. Defense contractors keep secrets for them (i.e. proprietary knowledge = BIG MONEY etc.). And frankly they probably do a better job.

However, It is also partially true that our government cannot keep secrets. There are former government and military officials constantly coming forward to release information on the UFO phenomena.

(2) UFO’s do not exist because: there are no credible witnesses (only Bubba from the holler and new age crackpots claim to see UFO’s).

FALSE: Credible accounts are constantly pouring in from professional pilots, military officers, government officials, former U.S. presidents (Carter, Clinton, and Reagan), celebrities, journalists, aerospace engineers, astronauts , cosmonauts, and professionals. Eyewitness accounts come from every corner of human diversity.

Professional organizations exist that allow credible witnesses to report UFO activity anonymously. Some anonymous professional pilot organizations receive over 4,000 reports a year.

(3) UFO’s do not exist because: we would have already picked up their radio communication signals with the SETI program.

FALSE: The sky is enormous and radio telescopes are only able to canvas a very small area of the sky at any given time. Second, this is assuming that radio signals are being transmitted all of the time, thirdly if we monitor a specific star system for radio signals we are essentially looking way into the past (because of the limitations of the speed of light), and finally that is an assumption that they are using radio signals at all. Our use of radio only came about less than approximately 100 years ago. More advanced civilizations may have other means of communication/technologies that don’t necessarily rely upon radio. Making the assumption that they are using the same technology as us, and then formulating conclusions based upon a lack of information is just bad science.

(4) UFO’s do not exist because: the distance between us and other solar systems is too far to travel based upon our current understanding of physics/time/propulsion.

FALSE: “Current Understanding” is the key phrase here. 400 years ago the world (including many scientists) believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. Galileo was imprisoned for his heretical beliefs and Copernicus only posthumously released his seminal work on our heliocentric world, because he feared reprisal from the church. It is extremely arrogant, short-sighted, and just plain stupid to think that we know and understand everything about the universe right now. 150 years ago nobody could have conceived of a television. Just imagine what we will know in another 400 years.

By the way: extraterrestrials may not just be hundreds of years advanced, they may be BILLIONS of years ahead of us.

(5) UFO’s do not exist because: they would have already landed on the Whitehouse lawn and introduced themselves to our president.

FALSE: Well that is rather presumptuous isn’t it? First of all, our president is the President of the United States, not President of the World, and “foreigners” may not be able to discern who the appropriate ambassador of Earth should be. Secondly, when you go out in your backyard do you announce yourself to the squirrels living in your trees? Do you ask them to “take me to your leader?” No, you just ignore them and go about your business, though the squirrels probably look at you with the same degree of awe, bewilderment, and terror that you would experience if you saw an alien being/flying saucer up close and personal. Don’t be so arrogant. We might be the top of the shit heap here on Earth, but that doesn’t mean that will always be the case.

—————————————————————————————————————-

(6) UFO’s do not exist because: they are only a cultural figment of the American imagination (only American’s see UFO’s).

FALSE: UFO’s are seen on every continent on Earth. Approximately 10,000 UFOs are reported worldwide every year (and that is actually only a small percentage of the number of sightings that are actually believed to occur). The French government recently released the COMETA report (a document detailing all of France’s documented (and credible) UFO cases. Brazil and Russia are world leaders in UFO sightings.

—————————————————————————————————————-

(7) UFO’s do not exist because: there are not enough stars in the sky to support the astronomical odds of the existence of a technologically superior species, so advanced that they can traverse the vast distances of space.

FALSE: As the late Carl Sagan once announced, there are billions and billions and billions and billions of stars. The odds that life exists in vast numbers throughout the universe are astronomically high. The odds that there are many other civilizations more technologically, and evolutionarily advanced than ourselves is also very high. Drake’s Equation was a low-balled estimate of the matter at hand. Mathematicians (post-Drake) have since demonstrated that life probably infects every nook and cranny of the known universe.

(8) UFO’s do not exist because: our beloved government representatives would tell us otherwise.

FALSE: The “black world” (the conglomeration of compartmentalized organizations within the United States’ Industrial Military complex) only gives information on a need-to-know basis. The reason why the money supporting the black world, is called black budget is because even congress/the president does not know the details of black budget expenditures. And really, would your TRUST your elected representative with this kind of critical information? Most of them can’t even seem to tie their own shoes (I’m just sort of kidding I guess). Secondly, this type of information is controlled by the military, not the civilian government.

—————————————————————————————————————-

(9) UFO’s do not exist because: it would be ridiculous for them to just come to Earth, fly around for a bit, then fly home without stopping in for a chat (i.e. they don’t have a good reason for being here).

FALSE: Again, you are presuming to know their motive. From an anthropological perspective, we hardly understand the motives of other cultures here on Earth, much less a completely different foreign species!!!! Who knows, maybe they are pleasure travelers on their honeymoon. Maybe they are graduate students doing their dissertations on primitive species. Maybe they think we are just squirrels.

—————————————————————————————————————-

(10) UFO’s do not exist because: there is no physical evidence of extra-terrestrial visitation.

FALSE: there has been biological and physical evidence collected from landing sites. This includes radioactive material, biological changes in the surrounding ecology, and impressions (created by a heavy object) imprinted into the earth. There is an entire subdivision of ufology dedicated to researching this type of phenomena.

Photographs and video can be interesting evidence, though the abundance of hoaxes thanks to advances in imaging technology unfortunately makes this evidence less compelling. There is excellent governmental documentary evidence (memos, directives, and policy procedures etc).

—————————————————————————————————————-

(11) UFO’s do not exist because: our government is benevolent and they care for our needs. There is no reason to hide the truth from us.

FALSE: The UFO phenomena is probably one of the most comprehensively, profoundly important issues to ever face mankind. Alien technology of this sort would impact how we procure energy (remember petroleum is the most valuable commodity in the world), would change how we see the universe, would change our relation to other cultures, would change religion, and politics. Virtually no stone would be left unturned. To spill the beans on this subject would completely change the game. If anything, they are not telling us because they love us.

—————————————————————————————————————-

(12) UFO’s do not exist because: I have not seen one, therefore they do not exist.

FALSE: So just because you’ve never seen a photo of dead Osama Bin Laden, does that mean he is still alive?

—————————————————————————————————————-

(13) UFO’s do not exist because: All of the photos and videos on the internet are hoaxed/manufactured.

FALSE: Some may be real, some are certainly faked. In this case it is difficult to cut the wheat from the chaff. But that is no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater. As stated before, photographs and videos are not good evidence. The best (and most compelling) evidence comes from government documents and credible eyewitness testimony. Remember, you don’t need a photograph to convict someone of murder. You just need credible witnesses. Furthermore, deathbed confessions are considered by the U.S. Justice system as the most trustworthy form of testimony.

(14) UFO’s do not exist because: flying saucers are drawn from the imaginations of Hollywood movie makers.

FALSE: The first time that the word “saucer” was used in reference to the UFO phenomena was by the businessman and private pilot Kenneth Arnold. He sighted several flying saucers flying in formation near Mount Rainer in Washington State. To paraphrase he said that they looked like two saucers laying on top of one another. It wasn’t long after that the media took off with his description and coined the phrase “flying saucer.” His sighting was in 1947. Flying saucers did not enter cinematic film mythology until the early 1950s after the Kenneth Arnold sighting.
